In this novel, Heyer turns a common romance convention upside down. Rather than the tormented hero turning to sex, gambling or alcohol, the heroine is fighting an internal struggle. Leonie has been a boy for most of her adult life. She is reluctant to become a woman once more. She is a bit of an issue for Avon to deal with at first but he manages to control his usual sharp wit and takes good care of her.
Heyer did an excellent job of contrasting Leonie's boyish ways with Avon's coolness, and reserved. Her physical reactions that are impulsive and blood-thirstiness are in stark contrast to his calm demeanor. I also loved the way he defeated the villain without threat or chasing him. Instead he employed insinuation and storytelling.
Another thing I loved about this book was the way Heyer subtilly highlighted the limitations of women's lives during this time period. Leonie is not keen on trading in her breeches or riding side-saddle for
Avon Book April layers of skirts, petticoats, and dresses. She also isn't willing to ride on the side saddle and shoots villains (despite it being a hazardous job). Avon is initially a little uncomfortable by her rebellious behavior, but he soon comes to admire her.
It was a little difficult to keep track of the story at initially, since Heyer calls the Duke various names in the first few pages. But once you get it figured out, it becomes much easier to read. This book was excellent and I would highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed, whether you're a Georgette Heyer fan or simply enjoy a good romance!

He doesn't attempt to make her jealous of his relationship with Leonie but he gently reminds her that she needs to be more cautious in her future relationships.
