In contrast to earbuds, headphones over-ear completely surround your ears, and block out any sound from outside. Look for headphones that have active noise cancellation, and a battery life of at minimum 20 hours.

imageThe Sennheiser Momentum 4s have a great ANC feature, with a convenient on-ear control, and an easy-to-use app. Its default sound profile delivers thump and punch, but vocals and instruments can be pushed into the background.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is a fantastic pair of headphones for those who love music and need the most efficient wireless headset. They are light and come with a soft carrying case and can be folded flat to fit inside your bag. Their touch controls are simple to use and intuitive and their battery can last for 30 hours with ANC shut off. They also have an auto-pause feature which shuts off your headphones when they are removed from your head to conserve battery.

The WH1000XM5 can be used with Sony Headphones Connect, which includes a range of features that can be utilized to customize the audio experience. The app can also be used to track your location and adjust ambient sound features to the environment you are in. The microphone is built in for hands-free calling. The Sony WH1000XM5 is able to play music wirelessly through Bluetooth or wired using the cable provided. They support aptX codecs, aptX HD codecs, and adaptive codecs for high-quality audio via Bluetooth.

The WH-1000XM5 has the same headband and earcups to the XM4 however it is more lightweight and comfortable. These headphones are comfortable to wear and are suitable for long periods. They're also great for longer flights and commutes. They're noise cancelling headphones that can cut down background noise, but not compromise clarity or detail. The Sony WH-1000XM5 have decent bass for a pair of closed-back headphones wireless Bluetooth (te.legra.ph). They also provide a great soundstage, with the clear separation of vocals and instruments.

They have a very low latency for watching videos, which is a benefit. The lag is so minimal that it's barely noticeable and they can be used for gaming on the go. They're not the best for video gaming competitively but they're excellent for those who wish to utilize them for entertainment or for making hands-free calls.

Sony is very committed to incorporating smart features into its products, and the WH-1000XM5 is not an exception. The active noise cancellation feature was one of the best I've ever used, and they come with a whole range of smart features to improve your listening experience. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine upscales compressed audio to a near-hi-res format. They're also compatible with Sony's LDAC technology which streams higher-bitrate audio via Bluetooth (although not as high-quality as a dedicated headphone DAC).

2. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

Since the introduction of the first generation PX7 in 2015, Bowers & Wilkins' flagship headphones have often been featured on top wireless headset lists and putting them in the same class as the likes Sony WH-1000XM5 as well as Bose QuietComfort. The PX7 S2 is the latest version that takes the original headphones up a notch with a boost in ANC performance as well as a new look.

In the earcups, the 40mm bio cellulose drivers are angled to point straight at your eardrums to deliver an audio experience that's more intimate than most closed-back headphones can manage. This is a bold claim however, one that the PX7 S2 delivers on. Vocals are clear and clear, and bass is a deep and rumbly when you need it to be.

The PX7 S2 also performs very well when it comes to voice calls, and has a crisp and clear sound that doesn't drown out your own voice. The PX7 S2 also comes with an extremely fast charge that can get you back to full capacity in just two hours. They're also compatible with high-resolution music due to aptX adaptive Bluetooth codesc which allow them to play audio with 24-bit quality.

The noise-canceling technology and the improved audio performance are among the most important upgrades for the majority of listeners. In our tests we were able to remove nearly all airplane noises simulated by the PX7 S2. They also excelled in Mozart's Et In Carnatus Est and Sanctus which provide great insight into the shifting dynamics between the solo vocal, the wind trio and orchestral accompaniment.

The PX7 S2s aren't just noise-cancelling, but they come with a range of other features that make them highly competitive with other top-rated headphones. They're completely wireless, with bluetooth headphone wireless multipoint support, headphones wireless bluetooth so you can connect two devices at the same time, and they come with a built-in microphone that allows hands-free calling using your phone's assistant. They're also incredibly robust, with premium-feeling and durable construction that will last for years of regular use.

Of course they're not the perfect models. The clamp force on our test models was a little less than we'd like, and there aren't as many additional app features available as some other options, but these aren't major issues. The PX7 S2s is a fantastic wireless headset that is able to compete with other headsets in its class. It's difficult to imagine a competitor to match them.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

For audiophiles who appreciate high fidelity and are looking for a top-quality wireless noise cancelling headset The Focal Bathys are hard to beat. They're the French audio company's first ANC headphones to use Bluetooth and offer amazing sound quality both in Bluetooth mode and when connected to an device via USB to enjoy hi-fi quality sound at up to 24 bits/192kHz (the headphone is also capable of blocking external sound with its closed ear cups).

The Bathys are stunning with their glossy finish and swooping curvatures that similar to Focal's closed-back Celestee and open-back Elear headphones. They also feature premium materials such as magnesium and aluminum for a robust build that feels solid, comfortable and worth the cost.

In Bluetooth mode in Bluetooth mode, the Bathys deliver a crisp and lively sound quality that easily outperforms similarly priced consumer ANC options such as the Bose QC45. They can be pushed even further by using direct DAC audio mode, making them a great choice for true hi-fi listeners.

Utilizing the Focal and Naim application users can change the playback controls on their headphone as well as the virtual assistant and Bluetooth pairing preferences. You can select between silent or soft intensities for ANC, adjust the brightness of the LEDs that are on the ear cups, and adjust the settings for EQ. The app is bare-bones however it provides enough functionality to warrant the cost of downloading.

The most notable flaw is that the active noise cancellation doesn't live up to the competition. The headphone doesn't block out all the background noise as the top-rated XM5 or AirPods Max, and its Treble accuracy is subpar with a muddy mid - to high range that detracts from the instruments and vocals.

The Focal Bathys aren't the most portable headphones. The ear cups aren't foldable down and weigh a bit more than the competition, meaning that they're not ideal for travel. They're more suited to an environment at home where they can be used for extended listening sessions or as an example headphone for sound engineering purposes. Despite their size and weight, the Bathys are surprisingly comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
