Sony's WH-1000XM5 headphones offer a minor update to the top-of-the-line over-ears that were introduced in 2017. The new model is minimalistic, featuring slim and sleek headband, earcups that are circular, and a polished metallic finish. These are lightweight and comfortable enough to wear for long hours.
The new model features the same great noise cancellation, but comes with four beamforming mics for hands-free phone calls. The most obvious improvement is location awareness which adjusts ambient sound control settings based on the location where you are. If you're sitting still at home, they may switch to a more subtle noise cancelling level than when you're riding the train to work. They can also play more outdoor audio so that you're aware of the surroundings while walking around town.
Multipoint is another feature that lets you connect headphones to two devices at once. This can be extremely useful when you need to listen to music on your laptop while making calls from your phone. Multipoint isn’t disabled by default, but you can enable it in the Headphones Connect App's System tab. The downside is that if you enable multipoint, you'll lose the ability use the high-quality Bluetooth LDAC codec.
Similar to the WH-1000XM4s before it, the Sony WH-1000XM5's touch controls let you manage music playback as well as make calls. Swipe up and down on the touchpad to skip tracks or back and forth to pause and restart playback. The right ear cup has physical buttons for power and volume.
If you have an iPhone, you can also modify the headphones using Siri commands and gain access to additional features such as personal assistants, a sleep timer, and a battery meter. Sony is also introducing voice prompts to guide you through the functions of headphones but I did find that they may be too tense for certain users.
The WH-1000XM5s' life expectancy of 30 hours with noise cancelling on matches the previous model, while 40 hours without it is a bit less than what other brands are offering. The headphones come with a soft carrying bag that protects the headphones from scratches, dust and impacts.
3. Shure Aonic 3 In-Ear Headphones
Shure is a brand that has been trusted by the audio industry for a number of years when it comes down to professional monitor earphones. Their latest earphones, called the Aonic 3, are no exception. It displays the precise frequency gain, gain, and bandwidth data for the high shelf, low shelf, and two parametric bands, allowing audio professionals to modify their audio to perfection prior to saving their personalized presets. The earphones in the Aonic 3 are connected to each other by downward-facing MMCX connectors. They can rotate 360 degrees and can accommodate a variety of ears for a comfortable, secure fit. They also connect to one another with the security of a locking snap.

They are missing some essential features required for a wireless pair like active sound cancellation, and transparency mode.
The earbuds have an elegant plastic finish and a slightly bulky look. They are topped with silicone tips. The earbuds are equipped with an IPX4 rating for water resistance and are therefore suitable for running or cycling. They're not as lightweight as some other alternatives on our list but they're still compact enough to fit into a shirt pocket and are comfortable to wear for long-term wear.
